Grading - An Explanation
An Explanation Of Accommodation Grading Schemes
All accommodation establishments advertising on this site have been recently inspected and approved by either Visit Britain or The Automobile Association (AA). In a few cases entries may read "Grading Applied For" - this denotes that some establishments have not yet been issued a grading by VB or AA but are expected to be graded by them shortly.
Hotels are given a rating from one to five STARS - the more stars, the higher the quality and the greater the range of facilities and level of service provided.
Other serviced accommodation such as inns, guesthouses, bed & breakfast establishments and farmhouses are rated from one to five STARS. The same minimum requirements for facilities and services apply to these establishments, whatever their "star" rating achieved. However, progressively higher levels of quality and customer care must be provided to achieve higher star ratings.
The more stars, the higher the overall quality in areas such as cleanliness, service and hospitality, bedrooms, bathrooms and food quality.
(Visit Britain also awards Gold and Silver ratings for exceptional quality in specific circumstances.)
Self-Catering Accommodation is graded with one to five STARS. the more stars the higher the overall level of quality you can expect to find. All properties have to meet an extensive list of minimum requirements before they can be considered for a star rating. Thereafter, increased levels of quality apply.
one star = acceptable quality; three stars = good to very good quality; four stars = exceptional quality
Caravan and Camping Sites
Caravan and Camping Sites are graded under a new STAR rating scheme. The star rating scheme reflects the overall quality of the site, donoted by one to five stars, with progressively rising facilities and services. Cleanliness and the environment of the site are also taken into account. (NB - the new Star ratings offer more than the previous "Tick" ratings, and should not be compared to them.) Some sites may still be awaiting their new Star ratings, in which case this is indicated. The AA "Pennant" rating scheme is also still valid, ranging from one to four pennants, more pennants denoting a higher quality and range of facilities.
